Kofi Dennis brings the vibrant rhythms of a West African village to life though music, storytelling, drumming, and dance. Using authentic instruments, the Ghanaian native leads lively call-and-response songs, games, and movement that gets audiences on their feet in a high-energy exploration of African cultural traditions.

Anansegro of Ghana’s Kofi Dennis, ambassador of West African culture, preserves and promotes the traditions of his cultural heritage through stories, games, music, drumming, and dance. Kofi brings a wealth of teaching and performing experience to his programs – he received training at Komenda Teaching College, University of Cape Coast, graduated from the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, and received a Diploma in Early Childhood and Adolescent Education from the University of Cape Coast before coming to the United States in 1993. He is a Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist and the founder of Play for Concepts, Inc. Past local performance venues include The Kennedy Center, National Zoo, Smithsonian Associates Discovery Theater, Taste of D.C., Baltimore’s ARTScape, and hundreds of schools, libraries, and arts centers.

A Visit to Kofi’s Village
Kofi Dennis presents an exhilarating and memorable introduction to West African culture. Audiences become members of a typical Ghanaian village, gathering with “royal elders” and court musicians to experience traditional music, storytelling, and dance, enhanced by the vibrant colors of native attire. Through call and response songs, games, dance, and drum rhythms, Kofi offers an engaging, first-hand exploration of West African culture. This energetic program includes traditional stories, demonstrations of authentic musical instruments, and an explanation of kente cloth symbolism. With his extensive background as a teacher and performer, Kofi has developed programs that engage, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages.

Fees are for daytime school programs in Maryland, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia only.

Workshops and residencies for teachers, students (grades preK-adult), and community groups are available. Topics include West African drumming, dance, traditional storytelling, traditional games, and creative dramatics (where teachers learn to help students create and dramatize their own stories).
